Why Fertility Can Make You Feel Like You’re Losing Yourself

When Fertility Starts Affecting Your Whole Life

You started this journey because you wanted a baby. You probably weren’t looking to rethink your marriage, your work, your beliefs, your relationship with your body, or who you are. And yet, for some women, that’s exactly what begins to happen.

Fertility over 40 can start touching parts of your life you never expected it to reach. You may feel more emotional or sensitive, less certain of yourself, or suddenly unable to tolerate things you once accepted. You may question what matters to you, what you believe, or why something that was supposed to be about having a baby now seems to be affecting your entire life.

What If Your Fertility Journey Is Becoming an Awakening?

For some women, the fertility journey becomes more than a fertility journey. It becomes the catalyst for an awakening. I don’t mean a beautiful spiritual experience where everything suddenly makes sense. Awakening can be disruptive. The ground you’ve been standing on can begin to shift before anything new has formed beneath you.

The beliefs and strategies that once helped you feel safe may stop working in the same way. You become more aware of what feels true and what doesn’t anymore. Things you could once ignore become harder to ignore. Questions you never expected to ask begin surfacing. That is why spiritual awakening can sometimes feel more like falling apart than waking up.

Why Awakening Can Feel Like Losing Yourself

We tend to imagine awakening as meditation, peace, connection, and a sudden understanding of purpose. But sometimes awakening feels like losing your footing. The ways you used to orient yourself no longer work, and you may desperately want to get back to the woman you were before fertility became so consuming.

At least she knew who she was. At least she thought she knew where she was going. Now you may find yourself facing questions no fertility doctor can answer for you: How long do I keep going? What do I actually want? What am I willing to do? What am I no longer willing to do? Whose voice am I listening to? Can I trust myself?

Why Fertility Reaches Such Deep Places

Perhaps it isn’t surprising that fertility can become such a powerful catalyst. Fertility doesn’t touch only one part of you. It touches your body, identity, relationship with time and control, partnership, sexuality, relationship with your own mother, childhood, ideas about motherhood, and your imagined future.

It can also challenge something much deeper: what you believe happens when you do everything right and life still doesn’t give you what you want. Fertility can hold grief and hope almost simultaneously. It can make you love someone who isn’t here yet while confronting you with how little control any of us ultimately have over some of the things we want most.

The Dark Night of the Soul and Fertility

Spiritual traditions sometimes describe the period when old sources of meaning, identity, and certainty fall away before something new has taken their place as the dark night of the soul. I think some women experience something like this through fertility.

You may no longer feel quite like the woman you were before this began, but you don’t yet know who the woman on the other side will be. You’re in between. That in-between space can be profoundly uncomfortable because the old ground doesn’t feel solid anymore and the new ground hasn’t formed yet.

What If You Don’t Need to Go Back to Who You Were?

When you feel disoriented, the natural question is often: How do I make this stop? How do I get back to myself? I understand that longing. But what if getting back to exactly who you were isn’t the only way through?

Maybe you don’t need to put yourself back together exactly as you were. This is where the idea of initiation can be useful. An initiation marks a passage from one way of being into another, and you don’t necessarily know who you’re becoming while you’re inside it. That uncertainty is part of what makes transformation so difficult.

Fertility as an Initiation

You did not choose the fertility challenges. You did not choose the pain. But once an experience has opened something in you, there can be choice in how you meet what has surfaced. Not the choice of whether this happened or whether it hurts, but the choice of what you allow the experience to do to you.

That does not mean romanticizing pain or deciding that fertility struggles happened for a reason. It means recognizing your agency inside something you did not choose. You can still want your baby with your whole heart while also noticing that the journey is changing you in ways you never anticipated.

Growth and Pain Can Happen at the Same Time

Allowing transformation does not mean floating peacefully through your fertility journey thinking profound thoughts. You can be awakening and still have days when you’re devastated. You can obsess over a test result, feel jealous when someone announces a pregnancy, or desperately want your baby.

You can be deeply changed by an experience you still wish you never had to go through. Growth does not cancel grief, and grief does not mean you are failing to grow. Both can be present at the same time throughout a motherhood journey.

Don’t Turn Transformation Into Another Fertility Project

If you recognize yourself in this, you do not need to become the new version of yourself as quickly as possible. That can simply become another form of control – another thing to accomplish, optimize, or get right.

You also don’t need to assign meaning to everything that happens. Sometimes you don’t know what something means yet. Sometimes you may never know. Holistic fertility can include allowing yourself to be where you actually are rather than forcing every experience into a lesson.

How to Move Through Fertility and Spiritual Awakening

If you’re grieving, grieve. If you’re questioning, let yourself question. If something that used to fit no longer fits, become curious about it before forcing yourself back into it. If you don’t know who you are right now, perhaps you don’t have to know immediately.

And while you’re doing that, take care of the human being going through this. Ground your body. Eat. Sleep. Walk. Be with people who don’t require you to explain yourself. Keep working with your doctors and make the fertility decisions that need to be made. A spiritual awakening does not require you to abandon the practical realities of fertility over 40.

A Different Question for Your Motherhood Journey

Perhaps, little by little, the question can shift from only asking, “How do I make this go away?” to occasionally asking, “What is opening in me right now?” Not “Why is this happening to me?” and not “What lesson am I supposed to learn?” Simply: What is opening? And how do I want to meet it?

You may still be in the uncomfortable place where the old ground doesn’t feel solid and the new ground hasn’t formed. You don’t have to understand all of it yet. Sometimes recognizing what is happening is enough to stop treating the disorientation as evidence that something has gone wrong inside you.

Who Are You Becoming Through Fertility?

Maybe the question is becoming larger than, “How do I get through this fertility journey and get what I came for?” Another question may be beginning to surface: “Who am I becoming through this?” And eventually, perhaps an even more powerful one: “Who do I choose to become through this?”

You can hold that question without giving up your desire for your baby. Spirit baby connection, if it is meaningful to you, can coexist with medical care, grief, uncertainty, and grounded decision-making. Your motherhood journey does not have to become either purely spiritual or purely clinical. The different parts of you can belong in the same experience.

You Don’t Need to Know Who You’ll Be Yet

Maybe fertility isn’t only something you’re trying to get through. Maybe, for you, it has become an initiation. If it has, you don’t need to know yet who you’ll be when you come out the other side.

You only need to be willing to meet the woman who is emerging. Not perfectly. Not all at once. Just with enough openness to recognize that even while you are still longing for your baby, something deeper in you may already be asking to be seen.

Final Closing Message

If fertility has begun changing parts of your life you never expected it to touch, you don’t have to rush to become who you think you’re supposed to be next. You can continue caring for your body, working with your doctors, making the decisions in front of you, and wanting your baby with your whole heart – while also making room for the woman who is emerging through the experience.
